Blue Olive portraits are about capturing can’t believe that’s us, wow wow wow, absolutely love them images you’ll be looking back at for years

We combine art with real life – we photograph babies in their own homes, families playing together, and real moments so that each image is so much more than just a pretty picture in a studio somewhere.

We take all the time we need, we laugh, we play, we have a ball. And then, a while later, we ‘ll meet to share your images and they’ll take your breath away (making all of your friends wildly jealous in the process).

what’s your style?

If you like the images you see on our site, you can’t imagine how much you’re going to love them when they’re of you & yours.

Our work has been described as edgy, photojournalistic, documentary, as art, and as pure life.

We believe life is better lived than directed, so we spend a lot of time quietly in the background, doing what we do best. Outside of that? We’re fun to work with, you’ll have a blast. We’ll keep you laughing and the kids smiling, with just the right mix of mantle-worthy portraits for the family and those glimpses into real life for you.

when should we plan portraits?

✪ When you’re adding to the family. Little people get lots of attention – common milestones include maternity (baby bump!), newborn (under 10 days), 6 months (sitting up & crawling milestone), and one year (cruising or walking milestone) shoots. Baby sessions take place at home, where Mom & Baby are most comfortable and we have lots of personal things on hand to create images that best capture baby and the new family.

✪ Once a year, when you have kids under 5. When your kids are under 5, they change so quickly! Most of our portrait clients have us back for yearly family photos – perfect to document your growing family, and for holiday cards towards the end of the year. We can meet at your home, or anywhere that lets you be a family. We’ve sat on the kitchen floor playing with pots and pans, jumped on beds, sat on the grass outside under the laundry line, we’ve played on beaches, ran in waves, fed the birds, played on bikes, had a picnic, chased balloons…

✪ Every few years for older kids, especially when milestones or changes are happening. As kids grow up we usually see our portrait clients every 2-3 years. We love capturing images that relate to favourite places and activities! We also often hear from families who are moving to new homes, for last portraits with their house or to remember the city if they’re leaving the area.

✪ Drop us an email to start the process, even if it’s a long time before your due date or you want to wait a while before our shoot – we book a limited number of clients per month so let’s get you a spot!

✪ We want to hear it all – give us the story, tell us who we’re photographing. We’ll get back to you with full package details and info.

✪ Once we’ve chatted about everything we do a signed agreement and retainer to reserve your date through our system.

✪ Then the fun begins! We’ll start to plan your shoot, guiding you through every step from what to wear tips to how to best prepare. We’ll send over tips on what to wear and what to have on hand, we’ll chat about who we’re photographing and what we want to highlight, and we’ll go through things you can do to make the session the best it can be. And yes – of course – if it pours rain on us or the kids get sick, we can always reschedule for a better day.
